About Fourth Grade
In fourth grade, the students are taught to be responsible for their classwork, homework and belongings. We stress organization and work toward becoming independent in these areas. We also stress the core values of the Bishop School community--Respect, Responsibility, and Regard for others.
Some important aspects to the classroom and curriculum are:
1. Accordion Folder: This folder is given and returned daily and is the key to staying organized in fourth grade. It contains five pockets--Agenda Book, Homework, Notices, Friday Folder, Miscellaneous
2. Agenda Book: Students are responsible for recording their homework daily (see "Homework" page above).
3. Friday Folder: Each Friday, students receive all their corrected work, tests, quizzes, etc. from the previous week in the Friday Folder. Notices go home daily, but the corrected work will be in one place every week.
4. Assessments: Students take assessments in all subject areas. In the fall and spring, DRA's are given to assess the students fluency in reading as well as iReady, an online assessment that assess reading comprehension and math progress. Three times a year students are responsible for taking an on-the-spot writing assessment, showing their progress in each of our main writing units - narrative, opinion, and informational. In addition, the fourth graders take quizzes and tests in science, social studies, and math in order to assess their progress in these subject areas. Students are given advanced notice for most assessments. I sometimes give "Quizlets" (pop quizzes) in order to check in and see where I need to go back and review.
5. Celebrations: Fourth grade isn't all work! We also enjoy celebrating birthdays, holidays and other events in our class. In particular, we have a small Points Party when the class has reached their "Dojo" goal for showing respectful and responsible behavior! For birthdays, students will not be allowed to bring in food items. However, if a child would like to bring a pencil, craft or other small item to school for each student to celebrate his or her birthday, please let me know!
6. Field Trips/Enrichment: Twice a year (once in the fall/winter and once in the spring), the fourth grade is able to take field trips to various places that coincide with the curriculum we study. Most often this ties in with our social studies and/or science curriculum. In addition, the Enrichment Committee does an excellent job providing us with great in-school programs to reinforce our units of study.
