In fourth grade we spend a lot of time using the reading skills acquired from previous years to become even better readers. We focus on learning about the characteristics of various genres and invest our time in a study of chapter books for a select few of the genres. We start the year geared toward realistic fiction because it is a perfect match with our first writing unit.
Throughout the year, students also keep a learning lens on nonfiction. Using a variety of texts that coincide with important fourth grade topics, students learn about text features and text structures in order to help navigate nonfiction. I love finding engaging articles that motivate students to read!
